Find out which items you can recycle in each of your kerbside bins

Most properties in West Lothian have a blue, green and brown bin to recycle your waste and a grey bin for general waste. However some properties, mainly flats, only have a blue and green bin to recycle and grey bin for general waste.

Below you will find information on what can be recycled in your bins depending whether you have all recycling bins or just a blue bin.

If you have a blue, green and brown bin:

Blue bin - paper and card

Green bin - plastic, cartons, tins and cans

Brown bin - food and garden waste (you will require a garden waste permit to dispose of garden waste in your brown bin)

Grey bin - non-recyclable waste e.g. nappies, polystyrene, dirty food containers, crisp/sweetie packets.

If you only have a blue bin:

If you live in a flat you may only have a grey and blue bin available to you at the moment. We are incrementally moving all properties onto green and blue bin recycling, however in the meantime, if you only have a blue and grey bin you can use them for:

Blue bin - paper, card, plastic pots, tubs, trays, tins, cans and cartons

Grey bin - non-recyclable waste e.g. nappies, polystyrene, dirty food containers, crisp/sweetie packets.

Your Bin Collection Schedule

You can check when to put your bins out for collection, subscribe for service updates and download your calendar using our postcode look up service.

Your bin should be presented at the kerbside by 7am on your collection day with the lid fully closed, no straps, weights or locks and no waste beside the bin. If you have communal bins you do not have to present your bins, the crews will collect them and put them back.

Community Recycling Centres

There are five Community Recycling Centres in West Lothian and you can visit any one of them as long as you are a resident of West Lothian. Here you can dispose of items such as:

larger household items e.g. mattresses and carpets
electrical items e.g. fridge/freezers, microwaves, TV's, laptops, kettles, tools etc
batteries e.g. car batteries, rechargeable batteries and household portable batteries
light bulbs
empty gas bottles (acetylene and CO2 are not accepted)
wood
rubble
excess household waste such as cardboard or black bags.

Recycling centres are only for disposal of household waste, no business waste can be disposed of at any site. Please also be aware that you must book an appointment before you visit the site, you can do this on the Community Recycling Centre (CRC) bookings page.

Glass Collection Points

West Lothian does not offer kerbside glass collections however there are multiple glass collection points throughout the area and at our Community Recycling Centres.

Bulky Uplifts

If you have larger items such as fridge/freezers, sofa's etc that you cannot take to a CRC yourself you can request a bulky uplift and we will visit you to remove the requested items. The cost for this service is £38.59 for up to 5 items for removal and the items must be outside your property at the closest point to the road for our crews to uplift them, we will not remove items from inside your house.
