Replacement Certificates
Information on how to obtain a replacement certificate
There are a number of ways to obtain a copy of a Birth, Death, Marriage or Civil Partnership Certificate.
- Please order using the online booking service Apply for a replacement certificate
- Please note we aim to process all standard requests within 10 working days where possible.
- If a certificate is requested and paid for within one month of the birth, death, marriage or civil partnership being registered, the fee is £10.00.
- The fee for a full certificate requested and paid for outwith one month of the date of registration is £15.00. Subsequent copies of the same certificate are £10.00 if ordered at the same time.
- Certificates can be obtained from any office throughout Scotland regardless of where the event was originally registered.
- Life events registered in the current or previous year need to be obtained from the local authority where they were registered.

- Fast Track Certificates can be processed at a cost of £30 and will be ready after 3pm if ordered before 12 noon.
- Any requests made after 12 noon will be processed and be ready by 3pm on the next working day.

- Please note certificates can be posted first class or collected from the relevant office. If posted there is a postal charge of £2.00.
Request for a certificate of an Original Birth Entry on the Adopted/Parental Order Registers
The issue of Certificates relating to Adoption and Still-birth are strictly controlled and issued as per legislation.
You may request a copy of an original entry marked "Adopted" through National Records Scotland - Adoption (opens new window)

These certificates cannot be purchased through your local authority Registration Office.
Birthlink is an Adoption Contact Register that can be used either by the parents placing the child up for Adoption or for the Adopted person.
