Water Pollution
Responsibility for water quality and pollution is shared between West Lothian Council, the Drinking water Quality Regulator and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA)
Who regulates Water Quality?
Mains supplied drinking water quality is the responsibility of Scottish Water. West Lothian Council deals with:
- Private Water Supplies where water is supplied by someone other than Scottish Water (opens new window). This is dealt with by Environmental Health.
- Cyanobacteria (Blue-Green) Algae. This is dealt with by Environmental Health in conjunction with SEPA (opens new window).
Who deals with Water Pollution?
West Lothian Council deals with:
- Burst and Blocked sewers. This is dealt with by Environmental Health in conjunction with Scottish Water and when necessary, SEPA.
- Septic tanks, where they are causing problems. This is dealt with by Environmental Health.
- Unidentified water (source not known). This is dealt with by Environmental Health.
SEPA deals with:
- Contaminated watercourses
- Industrial Discharges to water
- Compulsory Registration of Septic Tanks (opens new window)
- Sewage Treatment, except odour from sewage treatment works, which lies with Environmental Health.
