Porches

Permitted development rights for the addition of a small porch outside any existing external door of a house.

You will not need planning permission for a porch, provided that:

  • it covers an area of no more than three square metres
  • it is no more than 3 metres in height
  • no part of it would be within 2 metres of a boundary between your house and a road

If the ground level is not even, measurements should be taken from the lowest point immediately adjacent to the extension.

You will need planning permission if your house is located in a conservation area.

If your house is a listed building, you might require listed building consent, as well as planning permission.

If the porch would be within one metre of a boundary, it will require a building warrant, regardless of the need for planning permission.
