New Build Council Housing

This section provides information about West Lothian Council's New Build Housing Programme.

Background

Demand for social housing in West Lothian remains high, with 10,202 applicants on the Common Housing Register for West Lothian Council, Almond Housing Association and Link Housing Association at the end of March 2021. Waiting lists can be lengthy due to high demand and low turnover areas within West Lothian.

West Lothian Council set an ambitious target to build 3000 affordable houses in the ten-year period from 2012 - 2022. In order to meet this target, West Lothian Council is working close with our Registered Social Landlord (RSLs). At the end of March 2021, there were 2249 new affordable homes delivered by both the council and RSL partners. The impact of the Covid19 pandemic, resulted in delays to projects and completions.

A range of house types have been delivered including; flats, cottage flats (a 4-in-a-block with individual access), semi-detached, detached family houses and accessible bungalows. Ranging in size from 1 bedroom to 5 bedrooms.

The interactive map below shows the new build developments planned, under construction or completed by West Lothian Council as part of the 3000 houses target. In addition to these, our RSL partners have delivered over 500 homes since 2012.

The council have also increased their available social housing stock via the Open Market Acquisition (OMAS) Scheme (or Buy Backs).
