West Lothian's Historic Links to Transatlantic Slavery and Colonialism

Established in 2021, the West Lothian Legacy of Chattel Slavery Working Group is exploring local links to transatlantic slavery and colonialism.

This work was initiated in against the backdrop of the Black Lives Matter movement and a growing awareness of the role which Scotland and its people had in the history of transatlantic slavery and British colonialism.

A thematic review document [4MB] has been developed by the group. It highlights the ways in which transatlantic slavery and colonialism touched all aspects of life.

You are invited to come and be a part of the conversation and research within a community near you. Your participation in our Conversation Events will support the Working Group in making recommendations to West Lothian Council Executive. These recommendations will outline actions that might be taken to correctly and appropriately acknowledge the history of the past. It and will also help us to tackle the racial discrimination and inequalities still experienced by people from our ethnically diverse communities.
