Provost Cathy Muldoon officially opened the new block, which will provide fantastic facilities for pupils to learn key subjects such as science, technology and computing.

The extension is required to cope with rising pupil numbers from ongoing development in the school's catchment area, and has been funded through contributions from housing developers.

The original school was built in 2018 and was specifically designed to be extended in the future, once pupil numbers had risen high enough to require it.

The extension will increase the capacity of the school to over 1,300, providing teaching spaces over two storeys with an accessible outdoor learning area on the roof space. It was delivered on time and on budget on behalf of the council by development partner Hub South East with Morrison Construction as the main contractor.

Head of Education Siobhan McGarty welcomed the invited guests, who were treated to performances from young talented musicians from West Calder High School and an address from West Calder Headteacher Gerry Higgins.

Provost Cathy Muldoon said: "It was a huge honour to open the outstanding new extension at West Calder High School.

"The fantastic new facilities will provide an excellent venue for learning for staff and pupils now, and for many years to come."

West Calder Headteacher Gerry Higgins added: "We were delighted to welcome our invited guests in to see our wonderful new extension to West Calder High School.

"The additional quality spaces for teaching will help us to continue to improve the learning experience we can offer our young people."
