Continued investment in Open Space Assets

Investment in West Lothian's Open Space assets will totally nearly £5.2million this year (2025/26).

The funding comes from the council's General Services Capital Investment Programme 2025/26 to 2032/33. Between 2025/26 and 2033 over £24million will be spent on local Open Space and Sports assets.

The projects include continued works in relation to ash dieback disease, public art projects and various repairs to a number of ball courts, skate parks and MUGAs.

Highlights include:

Open Space and Sports Facilities - Investment of nearly £3.2million is scheduled for 2025/26. The projects include continued works

in relation to ash dieback disease, public art projects and various repairs to a number of ball courts, skate parks and MUGAs.

Within 2025/26, works will continue in relation to ash dieback to remove any trees that have been infected or are now dead as a result of the disease. The focus remains on ensuring public safety with the road network and areas of high occupancy being the main emphasis.

There are 12 parks that have been scheduled for repairs in 2025/26, including Springfield Park in Linlithgow, Blaeberryhill Park in Whitburn and Blackridge Park in Blackridge. This investment will ensure that the parks remain fit for purpose to deliver the needs and interests to West Lothian residents.

Children's Play Areas -  There are five projects identified for 2025/26, including Westrigg in Blackridge, Stoneyburn Main Street and Dixon Road Whitburn where the primary focus will be to replace expired play equipment and play safety surfaces. At Craigtoun Play Area, Winchburgh and Kirknewton play area, officers will also aim to improve the play area by incorporating accessibility and inclusive elements of play. There is a further £500,000 of investment which will be allocated amongst the eight district parks within West Lothian to ensure they remain fit for purpose.

Cemeteries - investment of £384,000 is programmed for 2025/26 which will comprise of footpath and road maintenance, maintenance of general cemetery infrastructure, as well as headstone stability and headstone strip foundation work.
