Casualty Reduction Schemes - A list of proposed casualty reduction schemes have been presented to Councillors

The council's casualty reduction programme is the council's main opportunity to make a significant impact in meeting casualty reduction targets and this is backed up by national research and local results.

Council officers have made a number of recommendations for the 2024/25 programme. These were discussed by the council's Environment and Sustainability Policy Development and Scrutiny Panel yesterday, before the Council Executive make a final decision later this month.

The council identifies the need for a road casualty reduction schemes by utilising accident investigation and prevention (AIP) techniques. Research for the Department for Transport has found that local safety schemes which tackle proven casualty problems make a significant contribution to casualty reduction.

The whole road network in West Lothian is mapped, the accident rates and total number of accidents calculated and detailed investigations are carried out. Schemes are evidence based on statistical data provided by Police Scotland, rather than opinions.

 

 

The sites identified in the draft programme are :

• B8020 Winchburgh To Broxburn (bend at Greendykes bing). High friction surfacing, signing and lining.

• B7008 West Calder to A70 (whole route from West Calder to the A70). Consider speed limit reduction to 50mph and new signing and lining.

• St Andrew's Drive, Uphall, near junction with West Main Street (A899). Centre island at junction, new signing and lining.

• A70 - whole length. Route treatments including surface improvement, signing and lining.

• A71 at Polbeth, from the BP garage westwards to Limefield Lane. Consider speed limit extension and traffic splitting islands.

• B8084 Station Road, Armadale at the rail overbridge and southward to Southdale Way. Consider speed limit extension, high friction surfacing and lining.
