Garden Waste Permits 11 May

To ensure that your garden waste is collected from 1 June onwards, householders in West Lothian are being encouraged to apply for their garden waste permits by 11 May.

Garden Waste permits

From 1 June 2024, if you would like the council to collect your garden waste from your home, you need to purchase and display a garden waste permit on your brown bin. Garden waste will continue to be collected from brown bins until 1 June without a permit.

If you do not have a garden waste permit displayed from 1 June, only food waste should be placed in your brown bin. If garden waste is placed in your brown bin and you do not have a permit displayed, your bin will not be emptied. Permits cost £50 per household and will be valid from 1 June 2024 to 31 May 2025.

Householders can purchase a permit at any time after 11 May (the cost will remain £50). However, to maximise the number of garden waste collections, please apply by 11 May to guarantee that your permit is delivered by 1 June. Permits should be attached to your brown bin and details on how to do that are included within the pack that you will receive containing your permit. Details are also available online.

Should residents not wish to have garden waste collected, they would be able to compost their garden waste within their own property or continue to dispose of garden waste for free at one of the council's five Community Recycling Centres.

West Lothian Council is being forced to reduce spending and change a wide range of non - statutory services due to insufficient funding being provided by the Scottish Government, combined with increasing costs. The council is introducing garden waste permits this summer in an effort to generate enough income which will go towards covering the cost of the garden waste collection service.
