National success for West Lothian Council Apprentice
An apprentice electrician with West Lothian Council has been named Apprentice of the Year by the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) Scotland.
Chris Harkins, who is a second-year apprentice electrician, picked up the Overall Apprentice of the Year Award (1st Year) 2023 following the APSE Scotland Seminar which was held at the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow over 16 & 17 February.
The 26-year-old former St Kentigern's Academy pupil, was nominated for the award by colleagues as he was the standout apprentice in the last 12 months in both the workplace and at college.
Once he was selected as a finalist, Chris had to undertake an interview process with APSE before he was selected as the Overall Apprentice of the Year winner.
This award is just the latest recognition for Chris after being named West Lothian College Electrical Apprentice of the Year for 2022.
Following his win, Chris has some words of advice for anyone potentially considering an apprenticeship in the future.
He said: "I am delighted to win this award. I'd like to thank my colleagues and tutors for putting me forward for this award in the first place and for passing on their expertise.
"I've had a great experience so far. Every day on the job is different, so it keeps the days interesting and enjoyable, you are always learning something new. I would advise anyone thinking about an apprenticeship to grab the opportunity with both hands and go for it. It is a trade that will set you up for the rest of your life. The people and experiences are great, you won't have any regrets."
