Make sure you are registered to vote in the Broxburn, Uphall and Winchburgh By-Election

Residents living in the Broxburn, Uphall and Winchburgh ward of West Lothian Council are being urged to make sure they are able to vote in a Local Government by-election on Thursday 1 December.

07 November
BUW by election

This by-election will see one councillor elected to fill a vacancy in the Broxburn, Uphall and Winchburgh ward of West Lothian Council.

Anyone who is registered to vote in the ward and qualified to vote in Scottish elections is able to cast their vote in the by-election. That includes young people aged 16 and over.

You can vote in person, via postal vote or you can have someone vote for you (by proxy)

Eligible voters have until midnight on Monday 21 November 2022 to ensure they are registered to vote in person.

Anyone who is not registered to vote should visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or call the Lothian Electoral Registration Office on 0131 344 2500.

Applications for new postal votes (including postal proxy votes) must be made by 5pm on Tuesday 15 November 2022. For this by-election, the deadline for postal vote applications comes before the deadline for new registration applications. That means that if you leave applying to register to vote until after 16 November you will not be able to apply for a postal vote.

Applications for new proxy votes (except for emergencies) must be made by 5pm on Tuesday 22 November 2022. After that, applications for emergency proxies can be made until 5 pm on Thursday 1 December 2022 (polling day). Emergency proxies are available in specific circumstances (for example, serious ill health, or late work commitments preventing voting in person). Those circumstances must have arisen after the normal deadline.

If you are already registered for a proxy vote but need to make changes to your details then the deadline is 5 pm on Tuesday 15 November 2022.

Royal Mail workers are taking industrial action in the run-up to the by-election.  You should keep that in mind in relation to poll cards, registration applications and postal votes.

You can find out how to register for a postal vote or a proxy vote and much more, including a list of the by-election candidates and the location of polling venues by visiting the West Lothian Council website - https://www.westlothian.gov.uk/BUW-Byelection
