Waste Education Lending Kits
The Waste Education Lending Kits are available to all nurseries, primary schools, secondary schools and community groups, free of charge. All lesson plans, resources and equipment will be provided.

The Recycling Paper Making activity teaches pupils about the natural materials required to make paper, why these natural resources need to be preserved, how West Lothian Council collects paper in the blue bins, how it is re-processed and how to reduce, reused and recycle paper. Pupils then make and decorate their own sheet of recycled paper from paper pulp.

Age range:
Nursery, Primary 1-7
Participants:
Whole class up to 33 pupils (smaller groups for younger pupils as more supervision required)
Duration:
- Lesson 1 - Paper making video (opens new window), game and facts (50 minutes including discussion time)
- Lesson 2 - Paper making exercise (45 minutes including clean up time)
The Waste Free Lunch Kit contains everything you need to help pupils understand how they can minimise their food and packing waste and how their choices can affect the environment.
This guide gives opportunities to incorporate other themes into lessons including, recycling, healthy eating, portion sizes, climate change, food miles and food journeys. It can also be used as the basis for discussion and to encourage ideas for a more sustainable school and community.
The Waste Free Lunch is divided into 3 lessons with approximated times. Schools may wish to spend more or less time on each section depending on class size and teaching time restrictions.

This information will help your school to prioritise which materials should be recycled, what size and number of rubbish/recycling bins your school will need and where bins should be located.
A Waste Audit and Action Plan will identify effective waste reduction initiatives. These initiatives will ensure compliance with legislation, enhance pupil learning experiences and may reduce the cost of dealing with your school's waste.
A follow up Waste Audit is required to monitor and evaluate the success of any waste minimisation initiatives and suggest further improvements.

- Lesson 1-Planning the waste audit (40 minutes) and walk-a-round (20 minutes)
- Lesson 2-Conducting a waste audit (90 minutes)
- Lesson 3-Classroom calculations (30 minutes)
- Lesson 4- Presenting results from initial Waste Audit (60 minutes)
- Lesson 5-Waste minimisation and action plan (60 minutes)

Our party kit contains all you need for a colourful party without the mountain of paper plates, cups and decorations going to landfill at the end of it.
By borrowing a kit instead of buying disposable partyware you can reduce the carbon footprint of your party and the amount of waste going to landfill. You can save money too! Our kit is free to borrow, we just take a £5 deposit which is returned to you when you return the kit in the condition you received it.
Party Kit contains:

1 x serving bowl
1 x chip and dip bowl
4 x large plates
Salad servers
1 wipe clean table cloth (140cm x 200cm)
Fabric bunting (reversible for a choice of colours).
Tulle pompoms - to hang up as an eco-replacement for balloons (please don't leave them on the floor).

Borrowing our Party Kit couldn't be easier:
1 - Fill out the Waste Education Request Form (opens new window) to request the kit and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
2 - Arrange collection (delivery may also be available).
3 - Pay a £5 deposit to secure your booking.
4 - Have a great eco-friendly party.
5 - Do the washing up (all tableware is dishwasher safe).
6 - Return the kit to us and get your deposit back
(Please Note: The kit should be returned completely clean and dry, all tableware is dishwasher safe. Any items missing or returned broken/unclean may result in the loss of your deposit).
Reusable Pass the Parcel
Our pass the parcel kit consists of 10 fabric bags with rip open Velcro fastenings, which fit inside each other. There is room for small prizes (bag of sweets etc.) between the bags should you wish and the smallest bag contains the 'winner' token which can be exchanged for the main prize by the winning child (it's up to you to supply the sweets and main prize).
The Waste Education Team can lend your school or community group the blue, brown, green and grey bin displays for your classroom, Eco-School assessment visit or information evening.
The recycling bins show which items can be recycled in each bin.
The 140l grey bin shows the small amount of materials which cannot be recycled and should be placed in the grey bin.
Display boards are also available to borrow to show case any Reduce, Reuse, Recycle information you would like to include with your display.
