Heritage Lottery Fund

West Lothian is a designated priority area for the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) under its Strategic Framework for 2013 to 2018.

There are 15 grants open. These include:

  • Open Programmes such as Sharing Heritage, Our Heritage and Heritage Grants, which are suitable for any type of heritage project.
  • Young Roots - a single-round programme to engage young people aged between 11 and 25 with heritage, through projects led by young people and partnerships of youth organisations and heritage organisations. No deadlines and an eight week assessment.

Targeted Programmes

Targeted Programmes are specific to heritage areas such as parks or young people. They have been introduced to help support areas of heritage that are in the most need, or are less accessible. Many of them are the only programmes of their kind in the UK. They include:

  • Townscape Heritage - helping communities improve the historic built environment of their local conservation area. This is a two-round process for funding up to £2 million.
  • Parks for People - for projects up to £5million relating to public parks and cemeteries. This is a two round process
Grants for Places of Worship - a joint scheme between HLF and Heritage Scotland, for projects that involve urgent structural repairs to listed places of worship.

Applications for the new programme, which was launched in early 2013, can include costs towards work that will encourage greater community use as part of the project, up to 15% of the total. A two-round process with regular deadlines.

There are a number of additional programmes, including small grants for community groups taking on heritage assets for the first time, transition funding for projects that have been previously funded by HLF and initiatives around the 1st World War.

All programmes help to deliver the HLF's aims of making a lasting difference for heritage and people. Projects will have to meet outcomes for heritage, people and communities - there are set requirements for different programmes.
